Analyst Predicts Nintendo Switch Will Outsell PS5, Xbox Series X/S This Christmas

According to gaming industry analyst Mat Piscatella of the NPD Group, the Nintendo Switch will be the best-selling console in the US this holiday season. Mat predicts that even with sales of the next-gen consoles, Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, due to shortages, Nintendo will have a sales advantage, especially when the purchase is a gift.

Mat Piscatella also says in his report that due to the decrease in expenses with in-person events such as, for example, tickets to concerts and theme parks, it may consequently make people spend their money on consoles and games to have fun at Christmas.

There are also other sales record predictions, for example, with gamepads and headphones, for people to have fun during the New Year and New Year holidays. Along with this huge number of sales, there will be a huge drop in the number of hardware promotions. Due to the huge increase in PS4 and Xbox One sales at the beginning of the year, due to the pandemic, it is believed that retailers will have "little incentive" to do promotions for the remaining stock.

Gaming hardware sales will see a 24% growth compared to the same period in 2019

The sales forecasts cited above come concurrently with the NPD forecast news that US spending on gaming hardware will reach $13,4 billion between November and December. This increase would represent a growth of 24% compared to last year. However, Mat says "there are significant market uncertainties" in these forecasts. The analyst adds that:

"While there is always great uncertainty in a console transition year, 2020 has obvious additional factors at play that did not exist in previous periods. It would be difficult to overstate the impact that the pandemic-caused changes in consumer behavior have had on the video game market.

An increase in video game player numbers and engagement during the spring and summer months depleted the existing hardware market, while fueling a corresponding increase in spending on content and accessories. The impact of these changes is expected to continue through the rest of the year."
