Award-winning director is chosen for the first episode of The Last of Us

Apparently, the first episode of The Last of Us television series already has its director. According to the website Hollywood Reporter, the person chosen to be responsible for the premiere of the production was Kantemir Balagov, a 29-year-old Russian filmmaker. In 2019, Balagov directed the film A Tall Woman.

Johan Renck, a Swedish filmmaker involved in the series Chernobyl, had been chosen to direct the first episode of The Last of Us, but the director had to leave the project because of his personal schedule.

The series also features another important name from Chernobyl. Craig Mazin, author of the series about the nuclear accident, is the showrunner of the adaptation of Joel and Ellie's journey, and is also writing the screenplay with Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog and creator of The Last of Us.

    the chosen director

Kantemir Balagov can fit in a lot with the production and deliver a good result, since the director has characteristics that make him a filmmaker linked to the dramatic side. As such, Balagov seems to have what it takes to introduce Joel and Ellie's plot in this first episode, as, as fans know, the characters' journey has a strong dramatic and tense weight.

The Russian filmmaker has already won awards for his films, including receiving the Un Certain Regard award for Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival, for the film A Tall Woman. The feature was also selected to represent Russian cinema as Best Foreign Film at the 2020 Academy Awards.

Mazin has even filled Neil Druckmann with praise, as well as saying that having the chance to adapt the game is a dream come true.

"Neil Druckmann is without a doubt the best storyteller working in the video game medium and The Last of Us is his magnum opus. Having the chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I'm very honored to do so in partnership with Neil"
