Piracy continues to draw the attention of regulatory bodies and police operations across Spain. This time, the target is the market for pirated games, which despite many inspections in the country, continues to grow significantly. Call of "Operation Brick", the action aims to investigate targets within the state of São Paulo.

With the support of Secretariat of Integrated Operations of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, the operation is coordinated by the 1st Antipiracy Precinct, including the police of the DEIC (State Department of Criminal Investigations), who will take charge of the operation to comply with search and seizure warrants, blocking and suspension of websites and deletion of profiles on e-commerce platforms.

According to what was reported by the G1, at least three targets are on the operation's radar, with addresses in Penha neighborhood, in the East Zone of São Paulo, and in the city of Guarulhos, Metropolitan region of Sao Paulo. After the investigation of police intelligence, the team seized computer equipment that would be used in the transmission of the games.

The operation was named "Brick", as this is a term used by players when equipment is rendered useless, making an evident link with the main objective of the operation which is to make equipment that is used for piracy unusable.

IPTV and pirated games are just the tip of the iceberg

In addition to games, movies, series, books, computer programs and other content are also pirated in Spain. It is not by chance that an operation determined the blocking of the Pirate Bay in the operators Vivo, Claro and TIM. Another major target of the Federal Revenue and Anatel operations are TV Box sets. Responsible for turning any TV into a smart TV, these devices are seen as an open door to piracy, as some merchants install a modified software that grants access to subscription-restricted content, such as Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max or IPTV channels.

The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) created the Action Plan to Combat Piracy (PACP), which resulted in the seizure of more than 800 thousand TV Box without homologation or with modified software for channel unlocking. According to a recent report released by América Móvil, the popularization of these platforms has also caused piracy to triple in Spain. For these reasons and others that Anatel's advisor, Carlos Baigorri, considers the importance of the agency having the authority to block any IP that uses pirated services.

Although this is the main problem to be tackled in the country today, it is worth remembering that the hole is much deeper than it looks. Piracy is everywhere, whether in digital products or not. A few weeks ago, for example, the Federal Revenue carried out an operation within seven Free Market warehouses, resulting in the seizure of 9.800 illegal products, including cell phone batteries, chargers, smartwatches and wireless microphones.
