Microsoft no longer requires Xbox Live Gold for free-to-play titles

Microsoft recently decided to remove the Xbox Live Gold subscription requirement for players to access free-to-play games. The company had already tested this removal in recent weeks and it has now been decided that all users of Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S consoles will be able to play multiplayer games online even without having Live Gold. In addition, Microsoft has also decided to unlock Xbox chat and Looking For Groups (LFG) functionality.

With this policy change about not needing Xbox Live Gold for free-to-play multiplayer games, titles like Destiny 2, Call of Duty: Warzone, Fortnite, Apex Legends, and many others will no longer require a subscription. There are currently over 50 free games for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S users.

This change in the Live Gold requirement issue comes after Microsoft was forced to reverse the price increase for its Live Gold subscriptions earlier this year. The company had tried to double the cost of an annual Xbox Live Gold subscription, but this action was not well received by gamers. So the company quickly backtracked and then offered to remove paid access to free-to-play multiplayer games.

Free Xbox Party Chat and LFG

With free access to Xbox party chat and free LGF, Microsoft ended up leaving Xbox Live Gold without much use. Even though Live Gold offers free monthly games, it is more interesting to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass.
