Mortal Kombat 11 had the "best launch" in franchise history

Despite being nearly three decades old, the Mortal Kombat series is still more popular than ever. David Haddad, president of Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment, announced that Mortal Kombat 11 had the best launch in franchise history.

David pointed out the milestone during his speech at the GamesBeat Summit 2019 event in Los Angeles. The news came just a day after the new game was released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC on April 23rd. It's a huge achievement for developer NetherRealm Studios and creator Ed Boon, who's been working on the series since launch (the first game came out 27 years ago!).

David did not mention specific sales figures, but said that in the Americas, Mortal Kombat 11 is the biggest release in Warner Bros Games' history. NetherRealm will release more updates for the game in the future (adding new characters for example) - David said the team has "years of new content" planned (i.e. there's still a lot of good stuff out there!)

"I couldn't be more proud of this team and what they've done and the innovations they've brought to [Mortal Kombat]," said David.

Warner Bros Games acquired NetherRealm from Midway Games when Midway went bankrupt in the year 2009.

NetherRealm Studios has already announced that Shang Tsung would be the first DLC character released, but details on the rest of the updates following the release of Mortal Kombat 11 have yet to be officially revealed.

Dataminers (people who do data mining) have discovered files for characters like the Joker, Terminator, Ash Williams from The Evil Dead, and other familiar names in the code for the Nintendo Switch version of the game. While these new characters are still rumors, Joker has already been in Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe and has appeared in the Injustice series as well, so it's not hard to believe he could make the jump to Mortal Kombat 11.
