The next version of PlayStation VR, according to Sony, will feature "dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity". According to the company, players will be able to feel "an even greater sense of presence and be even more immersed in their game worlds."
In its announcement, Sony says the new PlayStation VR will have improved resolution, field-of-view tracking and will use a new virtual reality controller. Sony Interactive Entertainment Platform Planning President Hideaki Nishino says:
"We're taking what we've learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that improves everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and data entry.
It will connect to the PS5 with a single cable to simplify setup and improve ease of use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience."
Hideaki claims that the new VR controller will incorporate some of the key features found on the PS5's DualSense, as well as being designed with the best possible ergonomics in mind. Hideaki says:
"This is just one of the examples of future-proof technology we are developing to match our vision of a new generation of VR games and experiences," he said.
There's still a lot of development going on for our new VR system, so it won't release in 2021. But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans as the development community has started work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality."
The current PSVR currently works as a compatible accessory for backwards compatible PS4 games on PS5. Titles like No Man's Sky and Hitman 3 will only support VR through the use of PS4 versions of the games.
Launch and availability
According to Sony, the new PlayStation VR for PS5 will be released in 2021, but an exact date for its commercialization has not been announced.
