PS5 will not be compatible with PS3, PS2 or PS1 media, according to Ubisoft

PS5 will not be compatible with PS3, PS2 or PS1 media, according to Ubisoft

It is certain that the Playstation 5 will retire some level of compatibility with games from past generations, as was said earlier this year during a keynote talk on the architecture of Sony's next-gen console. However, time has passed and what has been said so far is that there will be some compatibility between PS4 games on PS5, but the remaining generations? Well, according to Ubisoft FAQ, PS5 will not be compatible with original Playstation, Playstation 2 or Playstation 3 games.

In March 2020, during a presentation by Mark Cerny, chief architect of the Playstation 5 project, he promised that there would be compatibility between games from previous versions of the Playstation. However, it was never promised that the console would read video game media from past generations. According to patent applications in Japan, there is a possibility that old games will be played through a library of titles stored in the cloud, but nothing has been officially announced by Sony about the case.

According to Sony's Senior Vice President of Platform Planning and Management Hideaki Nishino, the Playstation 5 will support "the overwhelming majority" of the 4000+ titles released for the PS4 so far. At the very least, if you are sure that we will have some PS4 games available for PS5 when it launches, for example, Cyberpunk 2077, by CD Projekt Red and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, by Treyarch / Raven Software (the announcements were made by the developers themselves).

In the FAQ on the Australian Ubisoft website it is written:

"Backward compatibility will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but not possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 or PlayStation games."

We hope that Sony will soon clarify this compatibility issue that was already promised at the beginning of its announcements about its next-gen console. What do you think about the case? Comment below and share your opinion with us!
