PUBG Creator Says He Doesn't Plan To Make PUBG 2

PUBG creator Brendan Greene recently commented on his decision to stop working directly on PUBG and how he can't see himself making a PUBG 2. According to him, it's "full of battle royale" and it's "time to try anything else".

During GDC, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Greene kicked off by talking about how the last two years have been "an insane ride", with some highlights including PUBG's success.

On the battle royale genre, Greene points out that "it's been wonderful, and there's more to come." "It's a good genre that has room to grow -- 'last man standing' matches, there are so many different ways to approach it. I'm still looking forward to a For Honor battle royale, something with big, really big knives."

Greene went on to discuss the decision to continue working directly on PUBG and how a big part of that decision was the strength of the team working on the title. "They own the battle royale, they know what PUBG and our battle royale is, they understand what we want from the game and what we want to do by moving it forward, so I saw this as a good opportunity to advertise Special Projects".

Greene's next adventure will be PUBG Special Projects, a project that is still in its early stages. Greene, with the new game, aims to "explore online experiences and how to connect people in ways we've never seen before."

The most interesting part of the conversation is the fact that Greene reveals that he does not intend "there is no intention to do PUBG 2". "The 'last man standing' concept is great, but I've done that," he declared. "I don't really plan on making PUBG 2. I've done battle royale, it's time to try something else. There are ideas about how we connect with people and how we provide the different experiences that I have."

Greene says he feels "so lucky to be working with PUBG Corp". "We're not doing this for profit," explains Greene. "Eventually, someday, we can do it, but now it's about having time to explore. There's no deadline here, it's us with a few years to experiment. The game and the industry has become so difficult, that's a very lucky thing. we can genuinely explore and be curious for a while."
