In the interview, Gregory Louden stated that after years of playing Returnal, he is still amazed at the way the game unfolds with each cycle and also the surprises that were created.
Louden also talked about the title's time loop mechanics. The director stated that the cyclical nature of the narrative means that the further you go, the more you discover about the main character.
"Returnal's dark sci-fi time loop setting is so narratively gripping for us because the premise of Selene, our deep space explorer replaying the accident, allows us to add many hidden layers narratively that are uncovered through repetition. Nature The cyclical design of storytelling means the further you go, the more you discover Selene. What does the cycle do to someone? What is the history of the planet? Why are things beyond Selene's understanding showing up here? For me, great stories are cycles and are about revisiting and progressing for characters. Our premise allows us to explore that from the start."

Harry Krueger said that the Housemarque team has always been interested in themes of fiction and horror. The director believes that this is the opportunity the studio has always been waiting for to develop something in this genre.
