One of the most interesting features for the next generation consoles, PS5 and Xbox Series X, is backwards compatibility. Several titles from past generations allowed to run on new video games from Sony and Microsoft, where many of them will have a graphical enhancement. With that in mind, to clarify the question about the compatibility of its games, Rockstar has decided to explain now how compatibility will work for some of its biggest titles.

A statement was published on the official Rockstar website stating that the games GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 will be compatible on PS5 and Xbox Series X. In the case of Playstation 5, even with the release of an enhanced version of Grand Theft Auto V, it will be possible to play the current version of the title in Sony's new video game as well.

In addition to citing the titles that will have backward compatibility on next-generation consoles, Rockstar also said how it will work to play the old games on the new video games from Sony and Microsoft.

"If you own a disc copy of any backwards compatible game, you can insert that disc directly into your new PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X (excludes PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S consoles)."

"In the meantime, digital game owners will have instant access to download any compatible Rockstar Games titles that they have already linked to their PlayStation Network or Xbox Live accounts. On PlayStation 5, they will be available in the Your Collection section of the Game Library and Xbox Series X | S in the Ready to Install section."

The process described above is the same for the vast majority of games developed by other studios. In addition, it will be possible to take advantage of cross-play to take the progress made in previous games to the next generation consoles. This will be possible via a network cable (ethernet cable), Wi-fi or an external storage device such as a USB stick or external HDD/SSD. In the case of subscribers to the Playstation Plus or Xbox Live services, it will be possible to transmit progress data through the cloud.
