Sony announces $3,6 billion purchase of Bungie in response to Microsoft

Sony buys Bungie in response to Microsoft's announcement of a deal with Activision Blizzard. Bungie is the developer responsible for Destiny 2 and original creator of the famous franchise Halo — the latter exclusive to Xbox. The studio sold for $3,6 billion and is an attempt by Sony to "expand the reach of PlayStation to a wider audience," according to Jim Ryan, head of PlayStation.

Sony's intention with the purchase is to "self-promote and reach more players" and retain what Bungie is, keeping the studio as an "independent subsidiary." Jim Ryan says:

"We understand how vital the Bungie community is to the studio and look forward to supporting them as they remain independent and continue to grow."

PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst said:

"Bungie's technical expertise, coupled with its history of building highly engaged communities, makes it a natural choice for collaboration with PlayStation Studios. We are excited to make plans to share skills and knowledge and unlock the potential to have the brightest minds." of Bungie under the roof of the PlayStation."

    About Bungie

The Bungie studio became famous by releasing Halo as an exclusive title for the first Xbox. Over time, the developer ended up breaking with Microsoft to become an indie (independent) studio. In 2019, Bungie parted ways with the developer of Call of Duty. Now, in a big and strange twist, rival Sony is buying the studio that once created exclusives for Microsoft's consoles.
