    Sony Announces It Will Discontinue PS Store for PS3, PSP, and PS Vita; see what changes

    Sony announced yesterday, Monday (29), that it will close the PS Store services on PlayStation 2 and PSP consoles from July 3nd, thus preventing players from being able to buy new games, media or redeem vouchers after the closing of the shopping platform. The announcement took users by surprise, as the manufacturer still has a relatively large audience that uses services on older consoles.

    What changes?

    We still don't know the company's real reason for deactivating this feature on its older consoles, but according to rumors Sony's goal is to focus on PS4 and PS5, thus providing general improvements in the store. Despite the termination of the service, it will still be possible to access some features of the PS Store:

    • You can still download and play previously purchased game titles;
    • Access previously purchased video/media content;
    • Redeem game vouchers and PS Plus;
    • You will still be able to redownload and play claimed game titles through PS Plus as long as you remain a member of the service.

    As you can see, the games and media that were previously purchased will continue to be available on the account and there will be no loss in terms of the amounts paid.

    • You will no longer be able to purchase digital content for PS3, PS Vita and PSP, including games and video content.
    • Players will not be able to make in-game purchases;
    • You will no longer be able to redeem vouchers for PSN Wallet Funds (e.g. gift cards) on PS3, PS Vita or PSP devices once the PS Store and purchase functionality on those devices is closed.

    Regarding the account balance:

    • "Funds from your PSN wallet will remain in your PSN account, but you will only be able to use your wallet funds to purchase PS4 and PS5 products from the PlayStation™ Store on the web, PlayStationApp, or PS4 and PS5 consoles," the company said.

    More changes

    Sony has also decreed the end of the PS Store (via browser) for PS1, PS2, PS3, PS Vita and PSP. A specific URL still allowed players to access the old Sony store and purchase games for the old consoles. However, the link has been disabled and now redirects to the new PlayStation Store, which only has PS4 and PS5 games. Full details are on the official PlayStation website.
