Sony finally releases cross-play for developers

Since last year Sony has been hesitant with the idea of allowing users of its console, Playstation 4, to connect to other platforms such as Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. However, due to the strength of the market, its competitors and the developers, the company had started the beta phase of the implementation of "cross-platform multiplayer". Now, according to the Wired website, the functionality has recently left the beta phase and is now available for game developers to use the tool.

In 2018, Nintendo and Microsoft reached several agreements, breaking the "barrier of exclusivity", sharing high-level games. However, Sony seems to have a conservative mindset and has held back as long as it can to give in to cross-play. Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said in an interview with the Wired website that the company needs to keep pushing the Playstation and its features in order for the platform to survive in the next generation of consoles.

The success record of the incumbent platform next time is not excellent. So the main thrust of my executive energy is to avoid complacency.

In its beta phase, Playstation even included games like Fortnite and Rocket League, proving that it is possible to carry out cross-play without harming the platform. Another game to join the list of games with the functionality is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which will be released on the 25th of this month on the platform.
