Sony patents asynchronous online multiplayer for "Death Stranding"

Sony this week patented the game system where the environment is influenced by players, similar to what happens in Death Stranding. According to the patent description, the idea is extremely similar to what Hideo Kojima applied in Death Stranding, causing speculation about a possible sequel to Death Stranding.

The patent filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2019 was approved on December 7, 2021. The document credits Hideo Kojima as the inventor of asynchronous online multiplayer, where the system is described as being a kind of "terrain radar and gradual build". of a route in a virtual environment of a video game".

How Sony describes the asynchronous online multiplayer system created by Kojima

In Sony's patent summary, the patented method is described as a way of "influencing the game world of a video game", tracing a way for players who are online to affect the terrain of the environment in which the game takes place. Changes made to the scenario are transmitted to a player via a "cloud gaming system".

"The method [includes] determining that a first path has been traversed one or more times by one or more characters" and explains that it then changes "the first path based on a number of times the first path has been traversed by that or more characters ."

The "characters" cited above are likely online gamers, as in the patent filing it is described as a "first path cross-pollination" after undergoing "improvements across the plurality of virtual environments".

Throughout the patent it is still mentioned that there are ways that physically expand based on the number of players online, something present in Death Stranding. It all sounds very similar not to mention identical compared to the way Death Stranding works. In Kojima's game, players can build bridges and drop supplies along the way to help other players who pass through the same path in the game world.

With Sony's Patent Approval, Everything Indicates That Death Stranding 2 Is Coming

By blocking the use of this engine, Sony makes it clear that there may be plans for a title based on the world of Death Stranding and that a new partnership has been made with Kojima Productions. Another proof that Death Stranding 2 is coming was Norman Reedus' line, who says that a Death Stranding sequel is on the way.
