Xbox One X vs PS4 Pro Comparison: Which is the better console?

The Xbox One X is Microsoft's most powerful console. But it has stiff competition from Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro, which costs. Both offer 4K gaming and streaming. Design

For a powerful console, the Xbox One X is nice and compact at 29,9 x 23,8 x 5,8 centimeters. However, it is heavy, around 3,8 kg. Microsoft calls it the smallest Xbox ever, but it's only the thinnest - the Xbox One S is 29,4 x 23,1 x 6,3 cm, so it's smaller in other dimensions. Hardware

The new Xbox only comes in matte black, and it looks pretty bland. It's just two rectangular boxes stacked together. It's not ugly, but it's not aesthetically elegant either.

USB and HDMI ports

The Xbox One and Xbox One S had many ports, and the One X continues that tradition. In addition to its power port, it offers three USB 3.0 ports (one on the front, two on the back), HDMI input and output ports, IR output, S/PDIF and an Ethernet input. As with the Xbox One S, there is no direct input to Kinect. On Xbox One S, an adapter is required, and that's the case here as well.

The PS4 Pro has two USB 3.0 ports on the front and one on the back. The back of the console is also where you'll find the HDMI-out port, optical-out port, Ethernet jack, auxiliary port, and power port.

Performance and Graphics

The Xbox One X is incredibly powerful on paper. It has a new custom eight-core 2,3GHz processor and an impressive 1,17GHz GPU. This GPU includes features from AMD's Polaris architecture, and offers up to 6 teraflops of computing power. (This easily beats the Xbox One S, which has 1,4 teraflops.)

The Xbox One X also has 12GB of GDDR5 RAM. Microsoft says this is enough for 4K (3840 x 2160) gameplay at 60 frames per second. The Xbox One X also supports High Dynamic Range, as does AMD's FreeSync to prevent screen tearing.

Is it worth buying a 4K TV in 2018?

The PS4 Pro has the same AMD processor as the original PS4, but with 2,1 GHz. (PS4 Slim clocks in at 1,6 GHz.) The eight-core GPU also includes features from AMD's Polaris architecture, and delivers a formidable 4,2 teraflops of power. It has less RAM (8GB) than the Xbox One X.

Its Boost mode has led to an increase in frame rates in some PS4 games, but user and press reports have stated that frame rates are not always consistent. Some of this variability depends on the game. For example, PS4-exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn stuck at 30fps, while 4K was released on PS4 Pro.

Vencedor: Xbox One X. Simply put, its CPU and GPU are more powerful than those of the PS4 Pro, and Microsoft promises 4K gameplay at 60 fps.

Virtual reality

This one is easy. The PlayStation 4 Pro can use the PlayStation VR headset. The device, which costs around R$2.000, is also compatible with the original PS4 and PS4 Slim, and runs around 130 titles, such as Batman: Arkham VR and Resident Evil 7 in virtual reality.

While Microsoft partners have released a number of VR gadgets that work with Windows 10 PCs, it hasn't made any announcements about VR on Xbox One X. In an interview with Polygon, Alex Kipman said the company is focusing on that effort and the console.

VR must be wireless. Whether Windows 10 VR glasses like those from HP, Dell and Lenovo will be compatible with the Xbox One X or when a console-specific VR is announced, there are questions that could remain unanswered for a long time.

Sony has many celebrated titles, including The Last of Us: Remastered; Horizon Zero Dawn; Bloodborne; Uncharted 4 and Nioh. Some older games like Infamous Second Son were patched after the PS4 Pro was released to support 4K and in some cases HDR, while future releases like Insomniac Games' Spider-Man will also support the new PS4.

Xbox has some of its own exclusives, like Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War 4, and Quantum Break, but its lineup isn't as varied or as well-received as Sony's.

Some games like Forza Motorsport 7 run in 4K at 60 fps. Several games like Killer Instinct, Halo Wars 2, Minecraft, Resident Evil 7 and Rocket League, are in the process of being updated for this type of feature.

Xbox has one big trick up its sleeve: backwards compatibility. Xbox One got access to Xbox 360 games last year, and this year Microsoft announced that Xbox One systems will be able to play original Xbox games (both original discs and licenses).

Additionally, Xbox allows certain games, such as ReCore and Halo Wars 2, to be shared across PC and Xbox through the Xbox Play Anywhere program.

Winner: tie. While the Xbox gains ground with backwards compatibility and PC-shared games, the PS4 Pro still has more of the best exclusive titles.

Both systems require the respective services for you to play online. Each offers two free game downloads every month, and sales of a wide variety of older titles.

Live has proven to be more stable over the years, and PSN Plus still has a few blemishes on its reputation from a 2011 hacking attack, as well as some high-profile outages.

You can access PSN Plus free games on your PS4, PS3, and Vita, but you'll have to play them separately on each system. The Live Gold program only goes as far as Xbox 360, but you can play any of them and on Xbox One X thanks to backwards compatibility.

Sony gives gamers 10GB of cloud storage to save games with PSN Plus, while Microsoft offers unlimited cloud storage even if you don't subscribe to Live Gold.

Empate: Xbox One X. While PSN is cheaper and has better free games, Live Gold is more stable and offers more cloud storage. So, each has its strengths and weaknesses.

Interface and Special Resources

Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X have modern and fast interfaces and menus that make it easy to navigate consoles. The linear and minimalistic options of the PlayStation are very interesting and pleasant, but there are those who like the big blocks of the Xbox, in the style of Windows 8.

The Xbox One's Snap feature lets you use two separate programs at the same time, which is a nice addition, but the PlayStation 4 makes it easy to share your gameplay. The PS4 Pro also has Share Play, which allows you to control your games for others for up to an hour, regardless of whether your friend has the game on their console.

The PS4 Pro's DualShock 4 controller has a dedicated share button, allowing you to instantly capture your screen and share it to Facebook or Twitter, or even start a broadcast on Twitch or YouTube.

Xbox gamers can double tap the Home button, and select Options to capture screen or video. (The process is easier if you have Kinect, which uses voice commands). On Xbox, you can only send screenshots to Twitter, or stream to Twitch.

Both consoles have remote play options that allow you to play your games on other devices. Sony lets you stream PS4 games to PC, Mac, PlayStation Vita, and certain Xperia-branded devices, while Xbox One makes it easy to stream to Windows 10 computers or tablets.

Winner: PlayStation 4 Pro. The PS4 Pro makes it easy to share game images, photos and videos across more platforms than the Xbox One X.

Entertainment

The Xbox One's roots as an entertainment device were controversial when it launched, but it still gives it a big head start this round. The Xbox One X's HDMI input port allows you to watch live TV on consoles.

The Xbox One X also has a huge range of entertainment apps, including a number of individual TV and web channels. For music, you can stream from DLNA-enabled devices or put your music on the Groove Music app.

The PS4 has a smaller range of entertainment apps, but it has the most important ones, including Netflix and Hulu.

Both systems can stream in 4K from apps like Netflix, but only the Xbox One X has a 4K Blu-ray drive for you to watch a DVD in 4K.

Vencedor: Xbox One X. Microsoft's system has a better range of applications. It also has a 4K Blu-ray drive, which the PS4 Pro lacks.

Value

How much more are you willing to pay for the power of Xbox One X? Specifically, it's a question that can change your life by about R$160. The Xbox One X costs, on the day of this article's publication, about R$160 more than the PS4.

Conclusions

Question by question, the Xbox One X wins. You'll get stronger performance for games old and new, even in 4K; a wide catalog thanks to backwards compatibility with the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox; 4K streaming; support for 4K Blu-ray discs; and the most stable online gaming network out there.

However, the best exclusives on the market still belong to the PlayStation 4 Pro. This console can also play in 4K, although its games have varying frame rates. It's also the only system with a VR headset on the market. Oh, and it's about R$200 cheaper, which is a plus.

Both systems will stream Netflix and Hulu in 4K and support 4K and HDR gaming. But the Xbox One X is the more powerful system and has backwards compatibility, while the PS4 Pro is better value and has more exciting exclusive content.
