EA is making source code available for Command & Conquer and Command & Conquer Red Alert

In recent years, gamers have become accustomed to seeing games that simply ignore or remove mod support from the title. However, EA Games seems to ignore this movement and decided to cheer up the community of users who enjoy modding in games. The North American developer announced that it will make available the source code of the remastered versions of Command & Conquer and Command & Conquer Red Alert.

In a Reddit post of the project, EA Games producer Jim Vessella stated to Command & Conquer fans that:

"In addition to the release of the remastered versions of the franchise, Electronic Artis will make available "TiberianDawn.dll and RedAlert.dll, as well as their corresponding source code under the GPL license version 3.0"

According to information provided by Jim, both the remastered games and the source code will be released at the same time on June 5th. Through the code that will be open to everyone, players will be able to create great mods for games. According to the producer:

"These open source DLLs should help users design maps, create custom units, replace artwork, change game logic and edit data."

He adds that the open source resources will be able to be used in conjunction with a new map editor that is already part of the remastered collection of Command & Conquer.

It will be possible to use custom mods and maps no matter what platform is being used, whether on Steam or EA's Origin game launcher, although the process for using custom features is a little different for each. On Steam, the platform's workshop will be used to distribute maps and mods, where it will be possible to download content from the game's community hub and within each game. In Origin, the user will be able to download the maps, but it will be necessary to install the mods manually.

The source code of Command & Conquer and Command & Conquer Red Alert will be available under the GNU General Public License version 3.
