Forget ZTE! Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 will be the “first” with camera under the screen

The front camera has always been an open field for creativity. It's not today that manufacturers have created new ways to display it, whether boasting technology, discretion or screen use. They have already been positioned under the top edge of the smartphone screen, they have already been inserted over mechanisms that rotate, jump and so on, in notches that occupy a certain space on the display, and recently, the more traditional way is to house the lens in a small hole under the screen.

But when it comes to taking advantage of the screen, many users are not very favorable to house the selfie camera in a small hole in the front panel. To meet this demand from users, manufacturers needed to create new ways to have a camera on the front of the device, but without cropping the screen, inserting mechanisms that have a lifespan or wider edges. That's when a new idea emerged.

On paper, the idea of inserting a camera under the screen is a very good one. It would be an efficient way to take advantage of the entire front display and without having to "steal" any space for it. The first model to show this technology was the ZTE Axon 20 5G, launched in September 2020, however, its success was not lasting, as camera and screen tests disappointed by the low quality of the photos and a low resolution square where the lens was inserted was still noticeable on the screen.

ZTE then showed what not to do on a smartphone with a camera under the screen. The other manufacturers in the world are now starting to create their own models with the aim of soon launching their first model with this type of technology.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 will be the first

To meet the needs of users and especially the market in general, what was a simple rumor begins to become reality. Sources claim that Samsung and Xiaomi are already well advanced with their models for development and that curiously they have found a way to keep the screen resolution equal, with a satisfactory resolution camera.

Of the two brands, Xiaomi will debut this technology first at the launch of the Mi Mix 4. The Mi Mix line as a whole is already very special to the market, as it is considered the father of full-screen smartphone models. That said, we can say that the under-screen camera technology will be important not only for the company's fans but also for the popularization of the line throughout the world market.

Well-known insider @UniverseIce claims that in the second half of this year, at least five manufacturers will announce their models with under-screen camera technology. In addition to Xiaomi with the Mi Mix 4, Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 3 is also in the plans and could, according to him, be released first to everyone's surprise. Later, manufacturers such as Oppo, Vivo and ZTE itself will follow in Xiaomi's footsteps.

What to expect from Mi Mix 4?

So far, little is known about the device, as the manufacturer itself has not commented on such information. All in all, the Mi MIX 4 will not only come with under-display camera technology, but will also have a very balanced bezel distribution around the display, so all sides will be nearly identical in width.

Another relevant information about what device is that unfortunately, the Mi MIX 4 should not have a 2K+ resolution, largely because of the high pixel density, which would make it difficult to see the front camera. Even so, sources claim it will come with a specially customized high-resolution display. This could mean the presence of a Full HD panel with a better display effect, but it's still not clear how it actually works.
