Google announces construction of submarine cable in the Atlantic

Google has been investing in deep-sea infrastructure for some time. In June, for example, the company activated its first submarine cable in Spain with the aim of improving connectivity in Latin America.

On Tuesday (17), the company revealed details of Dunant, which connects the United States and France. The great detail is that it will be the first private transatlantic cable.

Intercontinental submarine cables, even for being of high value, are usually built in partnership with telecom operators. Monet, which connects the state of Florida to the cities of Fortaleza (CE) and Santos (SP), had its cost estimated at US$ 400 million without being managed by a consortium that includes Google, Angola cables, Algar Telecom and Antel.

Now, however, Google has decided to make a private cable. According to Google, three reasons made it opt for this:
      • Performance and latency: cables are made to serve a specific route. When we build privately, we can choose this route based on what will offer us the lowest latency for the largest group of customers. In this case, we wanted connectivity across the Atlantic that was close to certain data centers.
      • Capacity: The bandwidth we want to deliver can vary widely depending on what already exists and what our customers need most, now and in the future. Our capacity planning already includes estimates of the needs of Google and our customers for several years.
      • Guaranteed bandwidth throughout the life of the cable: The life of a cable can vary between 15 and 25 years, but as with many infrastructure projects it sometimes continues to serve the route beyond its initially designed life. Our ability to guarantee customers a certain level of connectivity helps them to create plans for the future of their business with confidence.

Dunant is named after Henri Dunat, winner of the first Nobel Peace Prize and co-founder of the International Red Cross. It connects the city of Virginia Beach to the coast of France. The idea is to improve connectivity to Google servers in Germany, the Netherlands and in particular Belgium.

The cable is expected to be operational in 2020. By that date, other submarine cables with investment from Google are expected to start operating.
