Google Photos will limit the free backup of any photo or video to 15GB

A little over 5 years ago, Google launched Google Photos with the aim of helping to store and manage the memories of its users. Whether it's photo or video files, the application stored people's memories at no cost, provided that the resolution of the files was not the original (limited to 16MP for photos and 1080p for videos), but that they maintained a good quality. However, the company has decided that from June 1, 2021, all new photos and videos uploaded to the platform will count within the free 15GB that are made available and shared between Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos (if you store images in their original resolution).

10 tips to use in Google Photos

    How it will work

So far, you won't need to do anything with any of your files that have already been stored or those that will be stored until June 1, 2021. Storage space will only be limited to 15GB, available for each Google account, from of the first day of the month of June of the next year, before that nothing will change and will not be counted.

The only exception, which will not change with the new image storage policy, is when the user chooses to save their photos and videos in the cloud in their original quality. By doing so, the free 15GB storage you split between Google Drive and Gmail will be spent.

If you have a Pixel smartphone (mobile phone developed by Google), photos sent through the phone will not be affected, even after June 1, 2021.

What can I do to better manage Google Photos after June 1, 2021?

To help users with this change, Google provides an estimate based on how long it will take a person to fill all available storage. This estimate is calculated based on how often the person backs up photos, videos, and other files to their Google account. According to Google, in June 2021 it will be possible to use a new (free) tool in the Google Photos app to manage stored photos and videos more easily. The new functionality will help the user to review what they want to keep and show photos or videos that you are likely to delete, for example, blurry photos or large videos.

In case you want more space to store your photos and videos in the cloud, it is possible through Google One. This is a monthly subscription that offers up to 2TB of file storage space. Plans start at R$6,99/month (or R$69,99/year), where 100GB is offered for file storage, and can cost up to R$34,99/month (or R$349,99/year), providing a space of 2TB for file backup.
