PS Store for PS3 and Vita will stay open, Sony says it made a 'wrong decision'

PS Store for PS3 and Vita will stay open, Sony says it made a 'wrong decision'

In late March, Sony announced that it would discontinue the PlayStation (PS) Store for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita. In the statement, the Japanese game developer said it would close the PS Store for PS3 and PSP on July 2nd and for PS Vita on August 27th. However, the company recently reversed its decision in the case of the PS3 and PS Vita, leaving only the PSP out, which will have its OS Store closed in July, as planned.

Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan said on the PlayStation blog:

"On further reflection, however, it is clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I am happy to say that we will keep the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. July 2 as planned."

What would change with the closure of the PS Store?

If the PlayStation (PS) Store of the PS3 and PS Vita were closed (in the case of the PSP it will), it would still be possible to perform some actions such as:

    • Download and play previously purchased game titles.
    • Access previously purchased video/media content.
    • Redeem game vouchers and PS Plus.
    • Re-download and play claimed game titles through PS Plus, as long as you remain a member of the service.

For PSP owners, according to Sony, regarding the account balance, it was said:

"Funds from your PSN wallet will remain in your PSN account, but you will only be able to use your wallet funds to purchase PS4 and PS5 products from the PlayStation™ Store on the web, PlayStationApp or PS4 and PS5 consoles."
