Roblox gets involved in controversy over children's spending without parents' permission

Roblox is a multiverse simulation MMORPG that is very popular with kids these days. The title that allows the creation of different worlds offers the possibility of playing several different minigames, making it a game full of challenges and different types of fun for players who are interested in its characteristics. Now, the game is embroiled in controversy due to children's spending on the platform.

According to G1, here in Spain there are several cases of users who spent more than they should on the game, causing a problem for their parents, as is the case of Renato Neves, a 14-year-old boy who spends about eight hours a day on Roblox and has already spent BRL 400 on limited in-game items. The boy claims to know that in the future such items will become rare and expensive.

It was also found by the G1 that, according to Guilherme Farid, chief of staff at Procon de São Paulo, the service received 24 requests for help for excessive spending on Roblox carried out without the permission of those responsible. It was said that in most cases Procon has managed to extort or reduce the value.

Farid also stated that cases like this have happened more frequently in São Paulo.

Microtransactions are widely used by several developers, ensuring great profit for various titles. Other companies, such as EA, have already been involved in controversies over the matter.

    Non-UK case

The situation in the UK was by far the most impressive. A few months ago, a girl spent in pounds the equivalent of R$30 on her parents' card.

Steve Cumming, the girl's father, said his daughter asked for £4.99 to spend on Roblox and he allowed it. The purchase was made on his credit card and the man did not even think about it after that, but about a month later, when he opened an application on his cell phone, Steve discovered that an amount equivalent to 33 thousand reais had disappeared from his account. . Steve noticed that there were multiple charges between £30 and £0,99 on his bill, the equivalent of charges of £9,99 and £6,5.

Steve said his daughter was very upset when she was told about the expenses. The girl stated that she believed she was using counterfeit money, just as she does in Monopoly, the board game.

The girl's father called his bank and asked to cancel his card, after which he got the refund offered by Roblox Corporation. The company told the BBC that it is working hard to try to prevent this type of situation, using measures such as not storing billing information. Additionally, Roblox Corporation said it works directly with parents to provide appropriate refunds whenever possible.
