Shigeru Miyamoto reveals his sons were SEGA fans and talks about violent games

Shigeru Miyamoto is a legend in the video game industry. The man is loved by millions of fans who admire his all-important work for gaming in general. Miyamoto is the creator of series such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong, thus being responsible for some of the biggest franchises in history.

In the 80's and 90's, Nintendo's great rival was SEGA, another giant in the gaming world, while the world saw perhaps the biggest dispute in the industry. Now, in an interview with The New Yorker, the legendary creator commented on several subjects, including his children's relationship with video games and even SEGA games.

"As far as my kids are concerned, I've been lucky that they've always had a great relationship with games. I've never had to be too strict or take video games away from them."

Miyamoto completed by saying that children played the competition titles.

"They understood that the video games were mine and that they were playing on loan, so I could take them back whenever I wanted if they didn't follow the rules. So when the weather was nice, I always encouraged them to go outside and play. lot of SEGA games, by the way!"

The producer stated that he did not feel jealous of the other company, even stating that this motivated him to create games that his children would prefer.

When GoldenEye 007 was released, Shigeru Miyamoto felt bad about the enemies killed in the game, going so far as to suggest that Rare put a scene in the credits where James Bond would visit his enemies in the hospital.

Knowing the curious story, Simon Parkin, author of The New Yorker, questioned the producer's opinion regarding the shooting and violent games that appear frequently in the industry. Miyamoto stated that he doesn't see problems with titles like this, but made it clear that he believes the market should not follow this pattern with an interest only in the profit that is made.

"I think humans are programmed to feel joy when we throw a ball and it hits a target, for example. That's human nature. But when it comes to video games, I have some resistance to focusing on this single source of pleasure. As human beings, we have many ways to experience fun. Ideally, game designers would explore these other ways. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that there are studios that focus on this simple mechanic, but it's not ideal for everyone to do it just because this type of game sells well. It would be amazing if developers found new ways to elicit pleasure in their players."

Shigeru Miyamoto also said that he doesn't like the idea that killing monsters without explanation is acceptable, as he believes that a story always has other sides that can be offered.

"Also, I also resist the idea that it's just OK to kill all monsters. Even monsters have a motivation, and a reason why they are the way they are. That's something I've been thinking about a lot. Let's say you there's a scene where a warship sinks. Seeing this from the outside, it can be a symbol of victory in battle. But a filmmaker or writer might change the perspective for the people on the ship, allowing viewers to see it in a different way. up close, the human impact of the action. It would be great if more game creators took more steps to change perspective, rather than always showing the scene from the most obvious angle."
