Last week, Valve said it will investigate how the Epic Games Store app could be accessing and collecting information from Steam users.
A Reddit user was responsible for revealing the data collection through the Epic Games Launcher. Thus, it was identified that the Epic Games application was accessing information in steam folders when it was installed on a user's computer with both programs.
"We are investigating what information Epic Launcher collects from Steam. This is private user data, stored on the user's home machine, and should not be used by other programs or uploaded to any third-party service," Valve said in a statement. communicated.
Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic, said the company is working to change the app, and assured that the information collected is limited to the Steam user's friends list, which is in accordance with the platform's terms of use. However, the executive said he will change the settings to be able to require a new active user consent before performing the data collection.
"The current implementation is a holdover from our rush to implement social features at the start of Fortnite," Sweeney said. "It's actually my fault for making the launcher team support this quickly."
We don't yet have additional information about Valve's investigation and what it will mean for the companies involved.
