Xiaomi files patent for smartphone with secondary display on the back

Some companies have already incorporated a secondary display into their smartphones. Recently, we saw that Motorola bet on this solution when it presented the RAZR 2019, its first foldable. Other manufacturers are also analyzing this possibility, and Xiaomi is one of them.

A new patent for the Chinese brand has been filed showing a device with a secondary display on its back. However, the sketch makes it very clear that the screen is not the same as the Vivo NEX Dual Display or the Nubia Z20, given that it is considerably smaller, being the same size as the module that houses the quad cameras. This results in great symmetry.

It is believed that the small display has the function of displaying calls and notifications when the smartphone is placed on a table, for example. In addition, the "small screen" should also show media controls for music playback.

Looking at the front of the device, we see that Xiaomi has eliminated practically all the edges, leaving aside any "hole", notch or retractable mechanism. The speaker for calls, proximity sensor and notification have been placed on the small top edge.

Interestingly, there's no front camera, so it's quite likely that the sensors positioned at the rear have a selfie-taking function, aided by the secondary display, which may not be a very good experience considering the size.

Just like any other patent, we don't know if Xiaomi really intends to release a smartphone like this at some point. So, let's wait for more information to know if the idea will get off the ground.
