Xiaomi is testing 'virtual RAM expansion' on MIUI 12.5; know how it works

MIUI 12 is the operating system of Xiaomi smartphones and brings many native features and functions that are not present on Android. Despite having several interesting features, the software is known for having an excessive consumption of RAM memory and impairing the overall performance of the phone, eventually causing a general system crash, being necessary to force the restart by pressing the power button for several seconds.

To fix this problem, the company may be working on a 'virtual RAM expansion' feature, in which MIUI 12.5 will use part of the internal storage as a way to save the applications cache, thus alleviating memory consumption by MIUI.

    Virtual RAM expansion

This feature is not new and is available on the Vivo X60 and OnePlus 9 (in the form of Turbo Boost). The function of virtual RAM (or extended RAM) serves to compensate for situations in which it is necessary to complete a task that requires more RAM than is available on a smartphone. In that case, the system "takes" a portion of storage memory and fills it with data that is not currently in use and do not require immediate access.

The function allows RAM and ROM to exchange data with each other to adapt more flexibly to the use case that is needed at a given time. The priority for RAM is the data needed to complete the process running on the smartphone; and the rest of the data is sent to storage. If the device's operating scenario changes, RAM and storage again exchange data with each other to use only those that are needed at that time.

This mutual exchange allows the smartphone to easily keep the most frequently used apps in the background to ensure a high opening speed, i.e. saving the cache for later use, making usage more fluid. .

    More memory

At the moment, there is no information on how much it will be possible to increase the virtual RAM of Xiaomi smartphones. In the case of the Vivo X60, this function (Enhanced memory management technology 1.0) allows you to get an additional 3 GB, that is, 8 GB is expandable to 11 GB and 12 GB to 15 GB. This feature is available because fast memories are now available in the market and the performance is comparable to that of an SSD in the computer. Vivo claims that this technology allows the system to cache up to 20 applications simultaneously, preventing the system from crashing due to high memory consumption.
