Apple acquires lens maker for augmented reality glasses

Apple has acquired a startup developer of augmented reality lenses for smart glasses, Akonia Holographics. The current novelty reinforces that the company is even investing in products that use the technology.

Maçã confirmed the purchase of the startup, however, did not provide details about the negotiation or its objectives. "Apple buys smaller companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our goals or plans," he said in a statement.

Akonia Holographics was founded in 2012 by a group of holography scientists and with initial funding of $11,6 million. The initial goal was to dedicate its efforts to the storage of holographic data. However, over time, the startup began to focus on augmented reality screens.

The startup currently has more than 200 patents for holographic systems and materials. Speculation shows that Apple is working with augmented virtual reality for possible applications in its products.

In addition, experts believe that Apple is already developing several prototypes, such as a headset with an 8K display for each eye, as well as a set of smart glasses.

This is not Apple's first acquisition related to augmented and virtual reality. It is worth mentioning that last year Apple acquired Vrvana, responsible for the Totem headset.
