Apple only has 2 to 3 million iPhone X ready, KGI points out

Next Friday is expected to start sales of the iPhone X, however, new reports from KGI Securities say that Apple has faced several problems with the production of the new model, with a total production of 2.3 million units to be distributed initially. , that is, a number far below what was expected.

According to Ming-Chi kuo, an analyst at KGI, the biggest obstacle that Apple had to deal with during the production of the iPhone X was the flexible printed circuit board for the device's antenna. The great complexity and still inability of the initial matrix of the manufacturer Murata to meet the specifications that are required by Apple was not fully met.

"Special materials, formulas, design, processes, equipment and tests are being requested for the FPCB antenna, as the specifications for the iPhone X antenna (supplied by Amphenol, USA) are higher than the iPhone 8 and only Murata and Career Tech can meet Apple's requirements," Kuo said.

The report also says that Murata was unable to resolve the issues before 2018, so the fabrications were replaced by supplier Career. "We believe Career will ramp up [production of new iPhone Xs] through November, as capacity expansion takes a long time, and its materials, formulas, design, processes, equipment and testing are different from Murata's."

Another problem linked to the manufacture of the iPhone X is with the FPCB board for the main camera of the device. Apple uses different circuit boards for each iPhone camera module, and the final quality of the main module with the wider lens would be the real issue.

The component called "Romeo", the TrueDepth camera's infrared dot projector, is yet another problem. He is responsible for visual mapping the user's face. However, the report says that facial recognition is failing because of the projector.

Kuo says that between 25 and 30 million units will be manufactured by the end of the year. Only 2-3 million units will be shipped to local distributors before launch.

Now, we have to wait and find out what Apple is really preparing, as it has not provided new information about the arrival of the devices to consumers.
