Apple says it's slowing down old iPhones

A topic much discussed on the Reddit forums has been about reducing the speed of old Apple devices, as the battery no longer has the same capacity. However, if you replace the component, the smartphone becomes fast again is what they say. Until then, this information discussed was nothing more than a theory.

On Wednesday (21) Apple admitted that it is cutting the performance of its devices. It all started when GeekBench decided to research the thesis to find out if there is any basis for this theory and managed to identify something strange in the performance of the iPhone with each new iOS system update. With that, The Verge decided to look for Apple to question the matter and see what she replied:

"Our goal is to deliver the best experience to consumers, which includes the overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices. Li-ion batteries become less capable of delivering peak current demands when in cold conditions, with low battery charge or as they age over time, which may result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronics.

Last year, we released a feature for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPhone SE to smooth out instantaneous spikes only when necessary, to prevent the device from shutting down unexpectedly during these conditions. We have now extended this feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2 and plan to add support for other products in the future."

In this way, Apple emphasizes that it did not end up slowing down iPhones as a strategy to force users to exchange their older iPhone for a newer model. According to the company, the main objective is to make the devices that have the oldest batteries, in this case of lithium ion, stop turning off unexpectedly.

That's because older batteries don't have the same effectiveness as new iPhones, and to avoid damage to internal components, the device simply turns off overnight. To solve the problem, Apple decided to reduce the performance of these devices, that is, a way found by the manufacturer to avoid device malfunctions or even component failures that are potentially dangerous.
