Apple will let you fix your iPhone; how will it work?

Apple continues to surprise us, and this time, we're not talking about something bizarre, like a $200 cloth to clean your iPhone. In fact, we're talking about the Self Service Repair, a new program designed to allow users to perform common repairs on their devices, without having to leave the house. Consumers of branded products will receive genuine Apple tools and components — the same as those used at Apple Stores and Authorized Services.

Apple will let you fix your iPhone

The company's idea is to expand access to common iPhone repairs, without the user having to seek specialized assistance to fix a particular problem with the device. So that your consumers can do it themselves, the company will offer repair manuals online (in text), which can be found in the new repair shop online.

Basically, it's the same service that was made available to independent repair providers with the aim of making them able to fix the company's latest releases, the iPhones 12 and 13. Initially, repair manuals should cater for the most common, like screen, battery and camera. Apple also says that, in the future, it plans to launch a similar service for Macs with Apple Silicon.

"Creating greater access to genuine Apple parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed. Over the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to genuine Apple parts, tools and training and we are now offering an option for those who wish to complete their own repairs."

Apple further guarantees that by itself, repairing your own iPhone does not void your warranty, if this period is still in effect. In any case, it is worth remembering that it is necessary to strictly follow the guidelines that are described in the manuals. If in the attempt to repair it you damage the device even more, then in this case it is possible that you will void the warranty if it is found that the instructions were not followed.

    Apple changing its stance

This novelty makes evident a change in attitude on the part of Apple, which historically restricted access to parts and repair manuals, which includes diagnostic and calibration applications for devices that have undergone repairs. Because of these numerous restrictions, the Cupertino giant had been under strong pressure from advocates of the Right to Repair (Right to Repair), a movement that aims precisely to provide consumers with more freedom in the repair of devices.

In response to this pressure, Apple said in the same release that, over the past three years, it had nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to genuine parts, tools and training to safely deliver repairs to its customers. Among these, more than 2.800 independent repair providers, under the program entitled Independent Repair Providers, were also made available.

This program was launched in the US in 2019, but is already present in more than 200 countries. Through these services, hundreds of independent supporters have access to the same training, parts and tools that Apple Authorized Service Providers have.

    Pricing and Availability

The company will begin making the service available in the United States in early 2022. Other countries should also be included as the initiative becomes popular. When the service actually starts, the store will offer about 200 pieces and tools for consumers interested in fixing their own iPhone. However, prices have not yet been released.
