Epic Games Filed a Formal Antitrust Complaint to the EU About Apple

The Epic Games v Apple case is already well known in the industry. The legal confrontation between the two companies has been going on for some time and has already caused a lot of discussion on the subject, as well as drawing the attention of other brands such as Facebook, which decided to enter the fray and offer assistance to the Fortnite developer.

Now, we have a new chapter of this dispute. According to The Verge, Epic Games has filed a formal antitrust complaint about Apple with the European Commission. The developer claims that Apple uses "carefully designed anti-competitive restrictions" and claims that this "completely eliminated competition in app distribution and payment processes." Epic Games says this gives Apple a lot of control over its platform developers.

    unfair advantage

Epic believes that Apple has a number of policies that give advantages to its own services, which is unfair to other iOS developers. The company responsible for Fortnite has shown itself against Apple's control in the distribution of software with the App Store.

Epic further criticized Apple's payment policies, unhappy with the fact that these policies often result in a 30% cut in in-app purchases. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic, even called the cut a "tax".

    Does not seek compensation

Epic Games has stated that it is not interested in receiving compensation in the EU, in fact wanting "timely and effective solutions" to address Apple's practices that it considers anti-competitive.

Check out what Tim Sweeney said.

"We just want to see these platform companies banned from using their control over the hardware to exert control over secondary markets and force them to compete on a level playing field with all competitors"

    The reason for the dispute

The Epic Games x Apple case began when the developer decided to try to circumvent the 30% cut on purchases made in the Fortnite app. Not liking what happened at all, Apple decided to take a drastic and firm measure, so it made the decision to remove Fortnite from the App Store.

After the title was removed, the confrontation took on greater proportions and Epic Games took the case to justice. Now, it is expected that, in this new stage of the dispute, Epic and Apple will meet in court in May.
