Google wins SpaceX cloud deal for Starlink internet service

Google has struck a deal to provide cloud services to Elon Musk's SpaceX, which has launched a series of Starlink satellites to provide high-speed Internet, the statement said last Thursday. SpaceX will set up ground stations inside Google's data centers that connect to Starlink satellites, enabling fast and secure internet services via Google Cloud, the internet search giant said.

"Google is pleased to partner with SpaceX to ensure that organizations with distributed footprints have continuous, secure and fast access to the essential applications and services they need to keep their teams up and running," said Urs Hölzle, Vice President Senior President of Google Cloud Infrastructure in the press release.

    Cloud service availability

This service is expected to be available in the second half of 2021 for corporate customers, the company said. The deal comes at a time when demand for cloud computing services has soared, with companies like Microsoft and Amazon dominating the market. Cloud companies have also entered the telecom sector, thanks to a jump in demand for 5G connectivity.

Google's cloud business accounts for about 7 percent of its total revenue, as per the latest earnings report. Last October, Microsoft won a similar deal with SpaceX to connect its Azure cloud computing platform to Starlink.

Private SpaceX, known for its reusable rockets and astronaut capsules, is ramping up satellite production for Starlink, a growing constellation of hundreds of internet broadcast satellites that Elon Musk hopes will generate enough revenue to help fund SpaceX's interplanetary goals.
