iOS 14.5: Apple explains why Siri asks for a music app

With the arrival of the most updated version of the operating system, it has been reported that Siri, iOS's virtual assistant, is asking for permission for users to set a third-party music or podcasting app as the default player for voice commands. Many users did not understand very well how this feature works, as the request was made sporadically and without any menu for manual configuration.

To clarify the function and its purpose, Apple was contacted by the TechCrunch portal, and in a note, it explained that there is no specific configuration in iOS 14.5 with the option to configure a default music player, as there is for other applications such as music services. email or browsing, for example.

Right app for the right time

From this, Apple explained that this Siri request is for the assistant's artificial intelligence to learn which apps you use for a certain type of content, being necessary to question only once, precisely on the first attempt to reproduce. To put it another way, Siri is able to learn which app you use for a specific type of content, and not play everything through a single default app.

For example, you might prefer to use Spotify to play music, but you might like to listen to weekly shows through Google Podcasts. When trying to play for the first time, Siri asks the user to choose the default app for this type of material. The same is true for music genres: you may enjoy listening to electronic mixes on YouTube, but prefer to listen to Madonna or Michael Jackson on Apple Music.

Thus, Siri understands user preferences according to how you use available audio players. This makes the iOS virtual assistant more useful by providing access to the right app at the right time.

TechCrunch further reviewed this new feature and concluded by saying that the option to "not allow the user to select a 'default' music app is a smart move to improve the iOS experience", and without the need to specify the app every time you are going to play certain content.
