Xiaomi demonstrates its solution for the front camera under the screen

The next step for front camera technology on mobile devices is an under-screen trigger, a solution that ZTE is expected to introduce in a working smartphone next Tuesday, September 1.

This announcement certainly moved other competing companies and Xiaomi has already shown itself in this race. A top executive at the Chinese company shared on his Weibo profile that its next-gen solution is finally ready for mass production, also posting a video revealing how the technology works.

The Chinese company is calling the ultimate third-generation camera solution. The first generation was a lab-only product, while the successor was a camera and screen in a prototype that was not yet good enough for mass production. The third version is finally ready to enter the market and be part of a commercial smartphone.

Xiaomi explained how the technology works in a separate post on the official Weibo profile. The panel is doubling the number of pixels on the small circle to have the same pixel density and color accuracy as the rest of the screen. It's borrowing colors from neighboring pixels, but is capable of turning off/going black on demand - particularly when the camera is on.

Due to the new pixel arrangement, Xiaomi is now able to implement its own understanding of how light should be transmitted to minimize glare. The image is extremely sharp with proper colors, supposedly so that quality is not sacrificed.

Mass production of devices with the new selfie camera will start next year, and luckily, the Mi 11 range will be the first to get it.
