Apple confirms purchase of Intel's smartphone modem division - deal to be closed by the end of the year

Apple recently announced that it is buying Intel's smartphone modem division. Rumors indicated that this would happen soon, and now it's official. The announcement was made by Apple itself on its website this Thursday (25).

According to Apple, this deal will close at the end of 2019 and will cost 1 billion dollars. About 2.200 Intel employees responsible for smartphone modems will be transferred to Apple, which will also own Intel's intellectual property, equipment and lease.

Now, Apple will rely on Intel's technology, employees and patent to manufacture its own modems.

As if that were not enough, the apple will still have 17 thousand patents for wireless technologies, ranging from protocols for cell phone standards to the architecture and operation of modems. Intel will be able to continue developing its chips, but only for PCs, IoT devices and autonomous vehicles.

"Apple is excited to have so many great engineers joining our mobile technology group, and we know they will thrive in Apple's creative and dynamic environment," said Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Technologies. Srouji added that the merger "will help accelerate development on future products and allow Apple to differentiate itself as we move forward."

Despite the encouraging news, it should still be a while before we see 5G modems made by apple. The way is to wait for the end of this year to be sure that the agreement will be signed - and wait for the next scenes of this story.
