Apple recently filed a lawsuit against a company it had hired called GEPP Canada over the alleged sale of more than 100 iPhones, iPads and Waches that should have been dismantled and recycled. According to The Logic, "at least 5337 kilograms of Apple devices left GEEP's facilities without being destroyed - a fact that GEEP itself has confirmed."
The illegal operation was discovered after an audit carried out by Apple analyzing more than 500 thousand iPhones, Watches and iPads between 2015 and 2017. According to "apple", it was discovered that 18% of the audited devices (103845 in total) were still accessing the Wi-Fi -fi over cellular networks. As this survey does not count devices that only accessed Wi-fi, the number could be even higher.
Apple may make iPhone 12 line official on October 13
Apple intends to recover approximately $22,7 million from the Canadian company. GEEP did not even deny the theft, however it claims that 3 of its employees stole the devices to benefit themselves, not the company. Apple says the employees named were actually senior executives at GEEP.
While Apple markets refurbished devices, the company does not want its products to be sold without meeting safety and quality standards. Apple told The Verge that:
"Products sent for recycling are no longer suitable for selling to consumers ... and can cause serious safety issues."
Apple is criticized by concert groups of the brand's products
Despite Apple's good policy on the quality of its refurbished products, repair groups criticized the company for its policies regarding third-party repair shops and hard-to-repair devices. While Apple and many other companies are focusing on recycling their products, many critics believe that reuse is best if they want a more effective solution.
