Facebook and Qualcomm team up to bring internet to remote locations

The internet, over the years, has reached more and more people, even so, in several places on the planet, due to various difficulties, especially physical, access to the internet is still not possible. Considering the fact, Facebook has been testing ways to bring internet to all corners of the planet for some time.

The social network initiative aims to help some countries and communities to achieve greater technological insertion with the increase in broadband and WiFi connections.

New this time, after launching a tool that helps users find public Wifi networks, Facebook revealed a partnership with Qualcomm that aims to create a wireless network called Terragraph that works based on the 60 Ghz frequency. With the measure, new smartphones will be able to connect to the Facebook network.

Facebook says the built-in idea is to provide a fast connection in places where fiber optics are expensive and coverage is not efficient. To top it off, rural areas will be able to use the Radio Integration Antenna for Spectrum Efficiency (ARIES) which is designed to boost the signal.

"Facebook and Qualcomm's technology are based on the 802.11ay WLAN standard, which uses the 60Ghz frequency and offers transmission rates of up to 20-40Gbps over distances of 300-500 meters. This technology will help signals overcome urban obstacles, serve more users and reduce upfront costs," says Facebook.

Facebook, in turn, did not reveal in which city the technology will be tested. However, according to previous information, San José, California, could be the first to receive the experimental network. Afterwards, the technology should be implemented in developing countries.
