Linux on DeX is now compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S10

The latest smartphones in Samsung's Galaxy S line are so powerful you could almost use them as a laptop. In fact, you already can, if you don't mind using Android in Samsung's special DeX mode. But if you want apps on your desktop then unfortunately it won't be possible. Unless you're comfortable using Linux (in its beta version for Samsung).

Fortunately, Samsung is now expanding support for this tool to its latest smartphones and, unusually, to some tablets as well.

To be clear, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S10 already have the Samsung DeX tool. That's the experience you'll get when connecting smartphones to an external monitor without even asking to activate.

What Linux on DeX offers is an experience closer to a real desktop, at least for those used to using Linux. You will be able to run a full version of Ubuntu via DeX, although it is developed for ARM. It is primarily aimed at developers, so they can create programs for smartphones directly from their phone, but even more advanced Linux users who are not developers are finding this functionality useful.

Linux on DeX was initially only available on two devices, the Galaxy Note 9 and the Galaxy Tab S4. An update to the Linux on DeX app reveals that all four models: Galaxy S10, S10+ and the Galaxy S9 and S9+ are now supported. The requirement for the latter, however, is that they must be running the Android 9.0-based Samsung One interface.
