Facebook must insert more politics in the news feed

Facebook has started testing a feature that is expected to expose more political cases in users' news feeds. The intention is to include in the feed a section called "This week in your government".

Taking into account the fact that Facebook knows where each user resides, the social network will display political posts referring to each region.

The news was noticed by reporters from Recode and then confirmed by Facebook itself. "We're testing a new civic engagement feature that shows people on Facebook top posts from their elected officials," a spokesperson said. "Our goal is to give people a simple way to know what's going on at all levels of their government."

Policy will be leveraged on Facebook

      • Spanish scientists can launch party to have more voice among politicians
      • Google is being accused of paying teachers to generate political influence
The new section should be available about once a week, and only if the user follows at least one politician. If Facebook can't establish the user's exact location, it will show political information at the state and federal levels, leaving out city news.

According to a Facebook spokesperson, there will be no ideological preference in this section. Thus, taking into account Spain, even if the user is declared to be from one party, he will also come across news from other parties.

Facebook did not reveal when the feature will be fully deployed. It is also unknown if it will be on a global level. And what do you think about it, will it open the minds of people who would not even have access to information about their elected officials? Comment below.
