Google Maps receives update for augmented reality games

The games industry is constantly changing and one of the current challenges is precisely the development of games in augmented reality (AR). Taking into account the fact, Google, aware that many of these games use location data from Maps, is adding three new features to the platform: support for "pathfinding", identification of reliefs and biomes.

The idea is that games can become more immersive, real and also powerful. Last year, Google had already provided a major overhaul of the Maps platform API, providing augmented reality experiences.

Now, with the changes, the company intends to give greater support to games so that they can adapt to the user's context in real time. Google Maps will take care of all the location data as well as the relevant infrastructure.

The PI will even add pathfinding support. The feature in question groups Google Maps route algorithms so that characters and even internal game elements can perform more actions on the move.

The virtual world will also receive improvements in terrain characterization, with new relief technology, for example, developers will be able to "style hills, mountains and cities to bring even more personalized environments to your game", says the Google team.

"Now, you can make cacti grow in the desert, have players forage for bugs in a pasture, or throw raccoons into a dumpster in the alley. Or how about a space monster equipped with a vacuum that gains power by sucking up different landscapes?", says the company about the possibility of customizing the landscape.
