Instagram returns with the lite version of its app with support for Reels

In 2018 Instagram launched the lite version of its app, however, last year it was pulled from the Play Store in 2020. Fortunately, the app is now coming back better than ever with its new features. According to the developers, Instagram lite started to be available today for Android in more than 170 countries and its installation needs only 2MB (versus 30MB for the normal version).

    What's new in Instagram lite?

According to what has been reported, Instagram lite can now send direct messages (DMs), record and post videos. In addition, there is also in the tab at the bottom of the screen a shortcut to Reels, omitting access to the purchase button.

Instagram Lite's product manager Nick Brown says there are "no plans" to bring purchases to the lite version of the app. However, as Reels got "a lot of engagement" in India, the company decided to keep this specific feature in the app. However, in the lite version, users will not be able to create their own Reels from the app, nor use augmented reality face filters. It will only be possible to use stickers, GIFs and text in the Reels posted on Instagram Lite, effects that use less data.

Lighter versions of apps is common

Several companies end up developing lighter versions of their applications, as there are many users in the world who use older devices, without much processing power. In 2015, for example, Facebook even launched the lite version of its app, while TikTok had its own in 2019.
