KB5001391 Update for Windows 10 causes error giving blue or green screen

Last month, in May, Microsoft released an update that ended up causing a nasty bug on some computers, especially those using drivers with Intel Rapid Storage technology. The error was reported after installing update KB5001391 for Windows 10 version 21H1, but luckily it was fixed in a later update.

The bug, named "BAD_POOL_CALLER", caused BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) or GSOD (Green Screen of Death) and was reported after installing Windows 10 Monthly Update version 21H1. At least it was a "small number" of users who were affected by the bug, with those using Intel RST drivers being the most affected.

On the updates feedback hub, one user said:

"I'm using Insider Preview Build 19043.928 (Version 21H1). Yesterday after installing Windows Update KB5001391, my computer always encountered the green error screen about a minute after login and restarted automatically. I had to uninstall the update to interrupt the restart cycle."

    Another user reported saying:

"It seems that KB5001391 caused my machine to be continuously blue screen (actually green) with bad_pool_call error. Removing that KB seems to have stabilized my machine."

Fortunately, Microsoft fixed the above mentioned bug before the May 2021 update was released. In a support post on April 28, Microsoft reported that the blue or green screen error "BAD_POOL_CALLER" has already been fixed in a update of the same patch.

"Fixed an issue that caused a bugcheck 0xC2 (BAD_POOL_CALLER) when using IOCTL_SCSI_PASS_THROUGH_DIRECT."

In addition to the error mentioned above, Microsoft says it has fixed issues related to certain audio drivers.

May 2021 Update should cause fewer issues

It is evident, as you may have already noticed, that with each update that Windows Update makes, certain errors are fixed that end up creating other unwanted bugs. However, Microsoft this time is carefully testing the May 2021 update through the Windows Insider program and it is likely that it will not cause any problems as it is an update based on the October 2020 update.
