Microsoft Edge has a bug that prevents users from closing the browser on Windows 10

Recently, in its latest update, the Microsoft Edge browser has gained a new feature called "Startup boost". This function is to start the browser in Windows 10 faster when turning on the computer. However, unfortunately, after activating the boost to open Edge, some users started reporting performance issues, including a bug where it was not possible to close the browser window.

When updating the browser to Microsoft Edge 89, the boost for automatic startup when turning on the computer occurs without the user's authorization. Microsoft says this feature can improve boot time by between 29 and 41 percent.

However, after this happened, users reported that they are unable to close the browser normally, because when they do, the program opens again, in addition to being running in the background (you can check this behavior through the Task Manager).

A user on the Microsoft forums says:

"I found several instances of Edge running in the background and when I turned off Startup Boost everything went back to normal. I didn't notice any performance difference when this feature was turned on/off. It just had an impact on my CPU which caused for my games to crash terribly."

    Another person says:

"On my notebook, with this feature enabled, after closing Edge it will open again and close and open again. Only By Choice -> Close Microsoft Edge can close it completely."

Microsoft investigates the Edge performance issue

Microsoft is already aware of the problems users of its Edge browser are experiencing. For now, the company is temporarily disabling browser functionality through the server. The company says:

"Hello everyone, I would like to inform you that we have decided to temporarily disable the boot boost as it was causing a frustrating issue for some users.

Our team is working on fixing some issues where some customers see the browser reopen immediately after exiting and/or a message about reopening tabs when the launch boost is enabled."
