Microsoft plans to simplify Windows 10 upgrade

Microsoft plans to simplify Windows 10 upgrade

Last week, Microsoft announced that it will merge the servicing stack update (SSU) and the latest cumulative update (LCU) for Windows 10 version 1809 and higher to reduce the number of administrators who install updates but are unable to install or manage problems.

Microsoft released the Patch last week and also KB4601393 which is the February SSU for Windows 10 1809 and Windows Server 2019. According to Microsoft, this version of the SSU supports a single package design that integrates Microsoft SSU and LCU. This design can simplify the process of deploying and installing Windows 10 updates.

The so-called SSU is a component that assists in installing Windows updates, which can ensure that the computer smoothly receives and installs cumulative Windows updates. When users or administrators manually install Windows updates, they must select the correct SSU for the latest cumulative update (LCU).

Before installing some LCUs, the computer must have a specific SSU. If the administrator ignores not installing the SSU first, the LCU installation will fail. Unfortunately, in the past, Windows only displayed the error message "Update not applicable". This made the admin or user not know what was wrong.

Therefore, Microsoft announced in September last year that it would add the SSU to the LCU as a single package to reduce the problem for administrators and deliver it to computers through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and Microsoft Catalog.

Microsoft stated that this month the SSU will support a single package design that integrates the Microsoft SSU and the LCU. This design can simplify the process of deploying and installing Windows 10 updates. Another Microsoft document pointed out that the February SSU is a prerequisite for the computer to install the latest cumulative update (a single LCU package combined with SSU) . This single kit design can avoid the problem of not being able to install the LCU due to lack of SSU.

Microsoft also stated that when using WSUS such as Configuration Manager, users will automatically apply the correct SSU when they choose to update the monthly cumulative update. If the company enables the "Dynamic Update Package" to update the Windows 10 image file, the Microsoft Catalog will no longer have a separate SSU, but will provide a package that integrates SSU and LCU.

Currently, only the latest version (above 1809) of Windows 10 has a single package. But Microsoft plans to convert the old version into this integrated package in the coming months. Prior to that, Microsoft asked corporate computers to install the February 2021 SSU.
