Most Windows Phone smartphones no longer receive security updates

Recently, Joe Belfiore confirmed through some tweets that Windows 10 Mobile was practically dead and that it would only receive a few security updates. After a while, Microsoft released a tool to update smartphones that still had Windows 8.1.

Now, a report based on the apps that still remain in the Windows Store reveals that Windows 8.1 has really come to an end, and as such, more than 75% of smartphones that still have Windows no longer receive security updates.

The number in question shows that many people have not yet left Windows 8.1, either due to lack of interest or even because Microsoft abandoned the devices, which ended up making it impossible to upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile.

Check out what Microsoft said on the matter:

"As of July 11, 2017, Windows Phone 8.1 users are no longer eligible to receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free assisted support options, or free online technical content updates from Microsoft. Third-party apps or paid support programs may provide ongoing support, but it's important to recognize that Microsoft support will not publicly provide updates or patches for Windows Phone 8.1."

According to the company, a backup will no longer be valid:

"Automatic or manual creation of new device backups for configuration and some apps will continue for 3 months ending October 11, 2017. Other services including photo upload, restoring a device with an existing device backup and the store will continue to work for at least another 12 months after support ends, after which time services will begin to be discontinued."

The alternative for those who want to avoid security problems is to change the devices equipped with Windows Phone. With this, users will also be able to take advantage of new applications that will no longer be available for the system.
