Windows 10 is updated and gains Linux GUI support

Windows 10, the main platform for computers and laptops today, has just received a new update that can contribute to the community of developers using the operating system. From now on, support for Linux applications has gotten even better, with its own module dedicated to Windows 10.

The novelty had already appeared in an update to the Windows Insider program, which receives the news first hand, before being released to the general public. This Tuesday, May 25th, Microsoft opened the 2021 build and announced that the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) now has more intimate integration with the home system and starts to run software that was originally developed with the graphical interface (GUI) of Linux distributions in a more practical way.

    What changes?

This novelty was already a long-awaited feature by the dev team and now it is fulfilled after many years of promise, but it still shows its value. With the broadest support between the two systems, it is possible to open applications, tools and other resources that were created especially for Linux, without the need to do system migrations via dual boot or use virtual machines.

Furthermore, it is possible to extend the graphic power of video cards that are dedicated for use in Windows, redirected to free software with a Linux interface. This function can be very useful to run embedded apps with AI or machine learning, since it basically simulates Linux system inside Windows 10, Of course, with some limitations.

    Availability

After the repercussion of the novelty, Microsoft announced that the feature was "widely distributed" among its users. But according to the ZDNet website, this is not exactly how it is happening. The source explains that this improved support was added to Windows Insider build 21362, and it is possible to include even a newer version than the one released in April. That said, the novelty should really only be available in the next major Windows 10 update.

Microsoft has also made available a complete description of the novelty and the update itself on its official blog in English, and it should soon reach the entire user community, especially developers.
