Windows 10 will monitor your NVMe SSD to prevent data loss

Microsoft recently released an update to the Windows Insiders testing program that has a new feature that will help the user pay more attention to the health of their data storage hardware. The update (Build 20226) was released on September 30th and brings the implementation of "storage integrity monitoring to protect user data" according to Microsoft. The new functionality will bring more security especially to those using NVMe SSDs and can prevent the user from losing data due to hardware failure.

In its post about the novelty, Microsoft says on its blog that:

"Trying to recover data after drive failure is frustrating and expensive. This feature is designed to detect hardware abnormalities for NVMe SSDs and notify users with sufficient time to act. It is highly recommended that users backup their data immediately after receiving a notification."

Solid State Drives (SSDs) have monitoring programs but are not practical

The monitoring of HDDs and SSDs is usually available in the program provided by the manufacturer, however these require the user to check the state of their hardware regularly and truth be told, most people do not perform any verification as a routine inspection. With Windows doing the verification work automatically, it will undoubtedly prevent many users from losing their data (if it is not stored in the cloud). To access the Windows 10 storage menu, one must go to "Control Panel > System and Security > Manage Storage Spaces".
