Facebook will appeal Cambridge Analytica fine

Facebook is appealing a €500.000 fine that is levied by the UK data watchdog over the Cambridge Analytica scandal, the social network confirmed. As per the decision made by the Office of the Information Commissioner, there are no records that UK users had their information shared inappropriately.

Anna Benckert, a lawyer for Facebook, said the ICO fine "no longer relates to the events involving Cambridge Analytica" because it found "no evidence" that Facebook users in the UK had their information shared. .

Facebook will appeal the fine involving Cambridge Analytica.

Even though Facebook has confirmed that it will follow the decision, when contacted for comment in the court in charge of evaluating the appeals against the ICO, it said that it has not yet received an appeal from the social network. The ICO confirmed the fact.

The ICO issued the fine at the end of October, at the time the regulator said that Facebook had not treated its users' data with due care, handing over personal information to third parties without clear and informed consent.

Facebook admitted the errors that allowed access to user data through Cambridge Analytica. The social network also said that it closed the gaps in the platform that allow broad access to data. Now, the social network is trying to frame its objection to the fine as a struggle for basic internet freedom.
