Messenger gains end-to-end encrypted audio and video calling

Facebook has been investing heavily in features for its Messenger app for a few years, as well as starting to integrate it with Instagram. Now the company is bringing end-to-end encryption (E2EE), a capability that has been present for a long time in WhatsApp, another company app. It is now possible to make audio or video calls with end-to-end encryption.

With calls and chats using end-to-end encryption, no one but the user and the person they are talking to can see the information being sent. However, even though this technology is now implemented in Messenger, Facebook says that it is still possible to report messages, if the user deems it necessary.

    Other news

In addition to encryption for audio and video calls in Messenger, temporary messages are also being implemented. You will be able to see the functionality by tapping on your profile picture when accessing a chat. You can also access the feature in the message writing field (on the clock icon).

With the option of temporary messages, it will be possible to control how long the messages will last, ranging from five seconds to 24 hours. Unfortunately, this feature is still in the testing phase and is available to a small group of users.

    Launch and availability

Facebook plans to start implementing encryption for calls and video calls through public testing in the coming weeks. The company is also thinking of running an encryption test with Instagram DMs soon.
