The line P30 da Huawei is synonymous with great cameras, flashy and elegant design and enough performance for all the best in the Play Store. Launched in March of this year, the traditional P30 and P30 Pro, the more powerful model, were soon considered one of the biggest launches of 2019. Running further down, we see the big guys' shy brother, the P30 Lite, which brings the beautiful design characteristic of the line to the most accessible audience.

With the task of offering the experience P30 for an audience that cannot invest much in a smartphone, the P30 Lite comes with a mid-range Kirin 710 processor and triple camera array. Will the P30 Lite can you honor the family, in terms of its great differential, the camera? We received the smartphone for testing and you can check the full review now.

Huawei smartphone has the tough mission of competing with the sales champions in Spain

    Design and construction

O P30 Lite has a design similar to the P30 e P30 Pro, however the differences already begin in the construction. The sophisticated glass at the rear leaves to make way for the plastic. But make no mistake: the feeling it gives is that of a premium smartphone, and much of this is due to the striking color in blue and purple tones and the 3D front glass, which protects it against some lighter shocks.

Continuing on the back, another difference with its brothers is the fingerprint sensor, which comes out of the screen to the circle pattern next to the cameras. Despite the position, the unlocking is quite fast and accurate, and the reading is done in any position the registered finger is placed. And speaking of the cameras, the three sensors are in a vertical line with a slight protrusion, leaving the LED flash alone integrated into the body. Logo in the upper left corner of the P30 Lite, there is the logo of Huawei, which gives a very interesting contrast to the flashy back of the smartphone.

Review: Huawei P30 Lite takes part of the P30 Pro experience at a reduced price
Design is really premium, standing out above all for its extravagant color

On the sides, only the right side has physical buttons: the volume buttons and the Power button. On top, there is only the drawer for an SD card and carrier chip; and at the bottom, there is a 3.5mm jack for headphones – which is not available in the most powerful models -, a UBS-C connection, a microphone and a mono sound output.

Review: Huawei P30 Lite takes part of the P30 Pro experience at a reduced price
Be happy: the P30 Lite comes with a headphone jack, unlike its bigger brothers

O P30 Lite it's simple but elegant just like the whole line. It's easy to handle with one hand, even with a 6,15'' screen, and it's also just as light, weighing in at just 159g. The basic protective case that comes in the box is used to disguise the bulge of the cameras and will work until you find a more decent protection.

    Fabric

Infinite screen has already become the standard on the market since last year, and now the fight is for who makes a display with the smallest notch. From the ''mustache'' style to the hole in the middle of the canvas, the Huawei bet on the line P30 the drop notch, present in smartphones from Motorola, Xiaomi, among others. In this regard, the P30 Lite also inherited the same characteristics as its older brothers, but features a 6,15'' display with Full HD+ resolution and a teardrop notch that houses the front camera. The technology, in turn, is IPS LCD, different from the OLED of the other models.

Review: Huawei P30 Lite takes part of the P30 Pro experience at a reduced price
Following the trend of 2019 smartphones and the P30 line, the Lite comes with a drop notch

There is some justification for the decision of the Huawei in offering an LCD panel to reduce the manufacturing cost, but it is already possible to see several models on the market with the same price range as the P30 Lite with AMOLED displays – and costing much less to do so. Despite this, the 6,15 inches of the smartphone play satisfying content with high brightness even in sunlight. It doesn't have the contrast and black as intense as AMOLED/OLED screens, but, within limits, it's a good screen.

the infinite screen of P30 Lite it has slightly more visible edges too, something like the Samsung Galaxy S10e is for the Galaxy S10, taking up about 84% of the entire front of the device. At first, the drop notch seems strange, but soon you get used to it and realize that it's a better solution than the initial notch (of the new iPhones). If you still don't get used to it, Huawei included in the new EMUI the possibility to “remove” the notch, including a black bar that simulates that traditional line that accesses the notification center.

Viewing content such as movies and series on Netflix or videos on YouTube is very good. If you prefer, you can “widen” the display with a pinch movement to see full screen, but be aware that you will lose some quality. If you're looking for a smartphone to view content and don't mind the deep black of AMOLED/OLED, the P30 Lite might be a good choice.

Review: Huawei P30 Lite takes part of the P30 Pro experience at a reduced price
The P30 Lite's screen has great colors despite the LCD technology

    Performance

For a mid-range smartphone, the P30 Lite doesn't disappoint when it comes to hardware. It features a Kirin 710 processor, from its own Huawei, being an octa-core (2.2GHz quad-core Cortex A73 focused on performance and 1.7GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 for energy saving) with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal space (with expansion for more 1 TB via memory card). For rendering graphics, there is a Mali-G51 MP4 graphics card. It is an interesting set for the price range and capable of running most applications without crashes and slowdowns.

Review: Huawei P30 Lite takes part of the P30 Pro experience at a reduced price
The processor chosen for the P30 Lite was the Kirin 710, manufactured by Huawei itself

All apps are opened with plenty of spare and the transition between them is done very quickly and fluidly. Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and apps that require constant internet like 99 or Uber, all stayed in memory and didn't restart even after hours of suspension. Some games in the cake of dozens of Apps in the background and none asked for a break or needed to be restarted, showing that the system was very well optimized here.

Regarding gaming, the Mali-G51 MP4 does a great job of rendering the graphics fast and Garena Free Fire runs very well on medium settings (HD at 30fps). if Free Fire has satisfactory performance, lighter games like Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Left, Subway Surfers, Candy Crush and the like are excellent in P30 Lite. The IPS LCD screen has a very good response in games that require a lot of interaction with the screen and the notch is not even noticed when we are involved in the shooting or running from the police through the trains.

Review: Huawei P30 Lite takes part of the P30 Pro experience at a reduced price
The Kirin 710 chipset can handle the biggest applications on Google Play

There is in the Kirin 710 a clear difference in power and breath between the Kirin 980 (present in the bigger brothers), this is clear in the startup, opening of Apps, loading of games and even in the rendering of the games. But if you're not a very demanding mobile gamer, there's nothing to worry about.

For fans of benchmarks and more accurate numbers, I recorded the score of the P30 Lite against its competitors in the Antutu Benchmark and 3D Mark applications; Here are the results photos:

    Cameras

The P Line of Huawei always brings in its releases an innovation in terms of camera. In the third generation it was no different, so much so that the P30 Pro received the seal of best “phone camera” in the world. Because it's a simpler model, we expected the P30 Lite to get a camera cut, but not as much. It is here that we see a huge chasm of difference from the P30 Lite in relation to the line P30, with below-average performance even for the category.

O P30 Lite it has 3 cameras at the rear, the main one being 24 MP with f/1.8 aperture and wide-angle lens; the secondary with 8 MP and Ultra wide-angle lens; and the third has 2 MP, especially focused on blur effect. definitely the Lite of the apply name here. The image quality of the smaller model in relation to its brothers is stark, clashing with the name that is synonymous with powerful cameras.

Review: Huawei P30 Lite takes part of the P30 Pro experience at a reduced price
Unlike the 4 cameras at the rear, P30 Lite has only three

In favorable light conditions, the P30 Lite it makes clear, noise-free clicks with the 24 MP main camera, and the f/1.8 aperture lets in plenty of light. The problem here is the exposure control in automatic mode, which doesn't make a good balance, leaving the photos quite blown out. The post processing of Huawei it helps a little with the overexposure, but the result is photos with a washed out appearance, without saturation and with an “edge” around the objects.

Making a direct comparison with the Motorola Moto Z3 Play, direct competitor of the model, the clicks with the cell phone of Motorola define more shadows, have better auto white balance and post-processing tends towards saturation. on the side of P30 Lite, the images look washed out, the light input control is less efficient and the post-processing is much more aggressive.

A artificial intelligence in cameras makes an interesting optimization and manages to recognize different photo scenarios, such as Animals, Food, Landscape, People and Plants. However, it is necessary to pay attention to the excessive beautification that AI puts in these modes, including when it comes to people. Portrait Mode, for example, blurs very well for the price range, without blurring the outlines of the main subject too much. But the post-processing is too aggressive, making the photos very artificial – even more than smartphones Samsung.

The ultra wide-angle lens, on the other hand, is not far from the main one. In good lighting conditions, the 8 MP saves the group shot with a good angle, but don't expect good definition and good white balance - in that sense, it's as weak as the main sensor.

Photo taken by the P30 Lite's ultra wide-angle lens

When night sets in, the situation gets worse. The f/1.8 aperture proves to be competent here, allowing all possible light to enter to make the photo lit up. But, if in the daylight the noises don't appear, at night they celebrate. And don't even risk shooting with the ultra wide-angle lens, the result is worse.

To compensate for sensor deficiency when conditions get challenging, the Huawei added Night Mode on the smartphone, which in theory would reduce noise and add more sharpness and brightness to images. In some photos, it really helps by increasing the brightness of the images and the sharpness, but the outlines of the objects are a little artificial.

In video recording, the P30 Lite records up to 1080p (Full HD) at 60fps with object stabilization and tracking. The footage is interesting, well defined and the microphone for recordings is surprisingly good. It is not worthy of mention. It's just a good camera for videos that a more advanced mid-range smartphone should have.

As for the selfie camera, the 32 MP with the help of Artificial Intelligence makes good clicks in good light conditions, but it also lacks automatic exposure control. The images are well defined and the AI is not forced on the beautification, but in some situations they were quite blown.

Overall, the camera set of the P30 Lite It is a little lower than expected for its price range. Models like the Motorola Moto Z3 Play, Galaxy A9 2018 and even the Galaxy S8, released two years ago, make for more interesting photos here. It is obvious that it cannot be compared with the clicks made by the P30 Pro, but for those who bear the name of P30, it should at least come with one of the best cameras among the intermediates.

    Operational system

EMUI 9 is one of the most interesting interfaces among the main ones on the market today. The system is fluid, has no crashes, stutters or slowdowns when opening Apps and games, and has a range of customization to optimize use.

Review: Huawei P30 Lite takes part of the P30 Pro experience at a reduced price
EMUI 9 is one of the best interfaces on current smartphones

Unfortunately, the modified version of the OS present in the P30 Lite does not bring Dark Mode, which should be included in some future update. Do you know the 'notch'? If you don't get used to it, you can add a black bar that “hides” the camera drop. There are also several navigation modes to take advantage of the smartphone's infinite screen.

Despite the absence of Dark Mode, overall EMUI 9 is an interface intuitive enough for you to forget about Samsung's One UI or Apple's iOS 13. There are various types of customization for themes, wallpapers, and the navigation is just as fluid.

    Battery

Review: Huawei P30 Lite takes part of the P30 Pro experience at a reduced price
It is not a Kirin 980, present in the P30 Pro, but its performance is on par with the Snapdragon 660

In our tests, the 3.340mAh battery of the P30 Lite were enough for a whole day in average use, without forcing the device with several games, 4G network, video recording and many Apps in memory. For more aggressive users, you will need to carry the charger included in the box with you. And speaking of the charger, it supports Huawei's 18W Quick Charge, which can recharge the smartphone faster.

In more intensive use, the P30 Lite got an average of 6 hours of screen in continuous display of videos at maximum brightness and connected to Wi-Fi. It's not a very expressive brand, but it won't let you down either.

    Audio

Review: Huawei P30 Lite takes part of the P30 Pro experience at a reduced price
Battery doesn't stand out on the P30 Lite, but it's not a negative point

O P30 Lite has only one speaker located at the bottom, and, like the P30 Pro, reproduces a loud and clear sound. At maximum volume, it can distort, but the end result is very satisfactory, above average compared to competitors.

The earphones included in the box are over-ear and the fit is not very comfortable. In terms of sound, it has decent bass, but lacks in the definition of the treble. If you know a little bit about EQ, it's worth risking the proper setup - there's sure to be an improvement in quality.

    Conclusion

O P30 Lite has a very tough mission here in Spain. Besides being able to win over the public for the second time, since the Huawei returned to Spain this year, it needs to fight head on with good and already established gadgets on the market, such as the One line, from Motorola, and the new Galaxy A line, from Samsung.

A Huawei brought, in fact, a differentiated construction, characteristic of the P30, respectable premium mid-range performance, and a great viewing LCD infinite screen. As for the cameras, it's good to make it clear that if you're looking for an intermediary that stands out, don't get confused by the name P30. It bears the name of the best camera phone in the world, but it is far, far from delivering such results.

Launched for R$ 2.500,00, currently the P30 Lite can already be found in the range of R$ 1.800,00, which puts it in the same range as Motorola One Vision, Samsung Galaxy A50 e Galaxy A9 (2018). The fight will be good.
