Windows 11: Microsoft confirms new printer installation issues

After the first update (KB5006674) released by Microsoft after the release of the final (stable) version of Windows 11, the company confirmed new issues related to the failure to install printers in corporate environments. According to the Windows developer, printer installation may fail when trying over the network on devices that access printers through the print server using HTTP connections.

The problem that is occurring with printers in Windows 11 is only affecting the download and installation process when it is done automatically. According to Microsoft, installing printers also has problems when using the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) in companies that share an IPP printer using printer connections.

    Microsoft gives temporary solution

According to Microsoft, administrators will still be able to install printer drivers on the client by copying driver packages from a known location (old versions of drivers).

The problems you are experiencing with printers affect both Windows client and server platforms.

Check out which ones are affected below:

    • Client: Windows 10, version 21H1; Windows 10, version 20H2; Windows 10, version 2004; Windows 10, version 1909; Windows 10, version 1809; Windows 10, version 1607; Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB; Windows 8.1; Windows 7 SP1; Windows 11, version 21H2.
    • Server: Windows Server 2022; Windows Server, version 20H2; Windows Server, version 2004; Windows Server, version 1909; Windows Server, version 1809; Windows Server 2016; Windows Server 2012; Windows Server 2008 SP2.

Microsoft is already working on a fix

Microsoft stated that it is already investigating the cause of the aforementioned issues and working to bring fixes for Windows 11 users. In the case of Windows 10 and Windows Server 2022 computers, the bugs can already be fixed through the October 2021 update ( check all the details here).

Another new problem with printers is confirmed

Unfortunately, another problem with the printers has been confirmed by Microsoft. This is a bug where custom print properties are not displayed correctly to print server clients. While this does not cause the printing process to fail, it does limit the default settings for printing.

    Microsoft says:

"This issue results from improper construction of the data file that contains the printer properties. Clients that receive this data file will not be able to use the contents of the file and will instead continue with the default print settings. Servers that use default print settings and do not have custom settings to be provided to customers are not affected."
